About Tommy Moore's
"Tommy’s chicken is the real thing: just crusty enough from simple flour dipping (or double-dipping), really fried (not steamed inside an inpenetrable shell), and minimally fiddled with. The coating is less important on the fried pork chop, but it, too, is the essence of plain but good cooking. Even humbler, but maybe more appreciated for that, is the braised cabbage flavored with a little ham hock; it’s sensational." -- The San Antonio Current, Jan. 24, 2007
Rarely does a restaurant even get the kind of praise from an alternative weekly when it has only been open for a few months but when that review came out, Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli had only been open a few scant three months and what started out as just some ideas on pieces of paper soon became the inspiration and economic success that everyone knows to this day.
Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli is a restaurant that the owner, Tommy Moore, had envisioned for quite some time.
With the ambiance of your favorite local eatery, Tommy Moore's has also been able to capture some of the history of many African Americans that made the Eastside their home and San Antonio their hometown.
The building that the restaurant once sat in used to be the training facility for Church's Fried Chicken, which is ironic as Mr. Moore was trained as a store manager at that very location just after he graduated from St. Mary's University int he 1960s. Maybe that's why so many customers like the fried chicken!
But beyond the fried chicken, the restaurant also has other great dishes and lends itself to be a great place of community gathering as it is quickly a place where judges, doctors, teachers, lawyers, journalists and neighborhood residents all come and socialize.
Come by and visit Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli for yourself and see why everyone, including the San Antonio Current and the San Antonio Express-News said that this is one of their favorite restaurants in San Antonio.
