Welcome to Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli

Rave reviews from Day 1

"Tommy’s chicken is the real thing: just crusty enough from simple flour dipping (or double-dipping), really fried (not steamed inside an inpenetrable shell), and minimally fiddled with. The coating is less important on the fried pork chop, but it, too, is the essence of plain but good cooking. Even humbler, but maybe more appreciated for that, is the braised cabbage flavored with a little ham hock; it’s sensational." -- The San Antonio Current, Jan. 24, 2007

Rarely does a restaurant even get the kind of praise from an alternative weekly when it has only been open for a few months but when that review came out, Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli had only been open a few scant three months and what started out as just some ideas on pieces of paper soon became the inspiration and economic success that everyone knows to this day.

One of the greatest things in the world is to get recognition from the public and as a restaurant, Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli did that throughout 2007 and even into 2008. This year the restaurant grabbed another Critics' Choice award from the Express-News. This one, is for the being the best neighborhood restaurant on the Eastside (Patty's Taco House was tied with us for this honor).

From the two stellar reviews found in the San Antonio Current and the Express-News, to receiving a 2007 Reader's Choice Award to being mentioned in San Antonio Magazine, the hard work that the staff and Tommy Moore put in day in and day out have made Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli one of the more frequented restaurants in town.

San Antonio Express News' Review - 3/6/07

The San Antonio Express-News came out with their 2008 Reader's Choice awards and once again Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli was selected as a Critics' Choice winner.

This year's award is one of not just about one food but about the whole restaurant as we have been recognized as the Critics' Choice for Eastside neighborhood restaurant.

On March 3, 2006, the San Antonio Express News' John Griffin did a review of the restaurant and he brought a few friends with him. One of the more notable quotations in his review was "'Man, it hits all the buttons!' That's what a friend said after learning that Tommy Moore's Café & Deli served peach cobbler. She had already enjoyed a plate of his perfectly crispy fried chicken with several of his home-style vegetables on the side, and she was ready for more."

It is comments like the above that have kept customers coming back over and over again and still to this day many local residents and out of town guests enjoy the ambiance, warmth and prepared foods. 2007 was a banner year for the restaurant and the compliments just kept flowing.

The restaurant would gather several other notable mentions over the 2007 calendar year (see below) and walked away with the coveted "Express-News' Critics' Choice" Award for best Fried Chicken in the city. CLICK HERE to read the review.

Other notable mentions in the Express-News includes the following:

A Conversation with Tommy Moore ( 4/22/08)

On 8/14/07, the Express-News printed the following in their "Reader's Questions" section: Q. The Tommy Moore Cafe and Deli that won the Critics Choice for Fried Chicken. Hackberry St. It specializes in fried chicken and Southern home cooking, while there are three Tommy's Restaurants (1205 Nogalitos, 8823 Wurzbach Pkwy., and 107 S. One of the very first reviews Tommy Moore's Cafe & Deli received was a January 24, 2007 review from the San Antonio Current alternative weekly newspaper.

The reviewer, Ron Betchtol, said in his piece, "I had lunch with the chief of police the other day. OK, not exactlywith the chief; he and a very large entourage, including men in blue and community leaders, had descended upon Tommy Moore’s Café for a meal and a meeting — without prior notice. I and my much smaller reviewing team had the misfortune of arriving shortly thereafter. The stress on the system of a new operation was inevitable — and so was the depletion of several menu items. Note to chief: Call ahead next time. Note to self: Get over it."

While we are sure the Mr. Betchtol was just being humorous in his opening paragraph, he was undoubtedly impressed by how the restaurant looked in appearance and how the food tasted.

"This place is AWESOME, the atmosphere is very pleasant and its a clean environment. The service was at the most attentive....Let's get to the real stuff. The Fried Chicken was GREAT, macaroni and cheese was fresh and worth trying over and over again. The cornbread and mashed potatoes were delicious. I have referred this place to my dear friends."

"I have eaten there several times and referred many people to this restaurant. Home cooking is long overdue in San Antonio and Mr. Moore and his family have fulfilled the need. I recommend it to all San Antonians looking for home cooking and a soul food experience this is where it is! "
